Mixed Media Paintings

I knew from the age of 7 that I wanted to be an artist. My mom and teachers were always encouraging throughout my education. Upon graduating from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, where I majored in Advertising Design with an emphasis in painting and illustration, I got right to work. I worked in a design studio, then at a Gannett newspaper as page designer, illustrator, and finally Graphics Editor. My wife and I had our own graphics/illustration studio for many years as well. Along the way I continued to paint and exhibit my work – until it was time to pursue painting full-time.

Since 1988, I have exhibited and sold my paintings across the country in galleries, museums and universities, through one-man and group shows. I have participated in over 200 art festivals and invitational exhibitions and won many awards for my work. My paintings have appeared in magazines, newspapers, televisions shows, books, posters, annual reports, brochures, websites, restaurant walls, and stage sets — and have a home in numerous corporate and private collections internationally.

The process for each painting begins with sketches, often inspired by vintage imagery or my own photographs taken of friends, animals and objects. Many of my abstract shapes are derived from subconscious doodles. The sketches evolve into the final composition which is enlarged and drawn onto canvas.

Then I collage individual pieces of typography and other visual elements — such as maps and elements of pop culture— securely on the surface with many layers of an adhesive, transparent medium to ensure a flat, seamless application. The typographic images are chosen randomly by type font, size, boldness and color. When I can’t find the needed size or color, I create my own typography. Next, I block in color with layers of acrylics. Detail and shading is then applied with oil colors, using a drybrush technique.

With a nod to my past as a visual journalist, my current body of work explores the complexity of finding truth. We are bombarded daily with conflicting messages, disinformation, manipulation and spin through traditional and social medias. And, we must remain vigilant to navigate the chaos for clarity and perspective.
